A
'Starting to Collect' book is just what every beginner needs
when considering investing in antique jewellery where mistakes
can be costly.
John Benjamin is the ideal
guide through the intricacies of antique jewellery collecting.
He started his career as an apprentice at antique jewellers,
Cameo Corner, in London before joining Phillips Fine Art
Auctioneers. By the time he left Phillips in 1999, he was
International Director of Jewellery responsible for auction
programmes in Geneva and London. He left to set up on his
own as an independent jewellery consultant and now spends
his time lecturing, writing and broadcasting and is one
of the BBC's Antique Roadshow's regular
experts.
This beautifully illustrated
book begins with the basics of gemstones, their attributes
and history, before looking at jewellery from earliest times
to the 18th century. After this background, the author uses
the following chapters to look at different types of jewellery
including cameos and intaglios, mourning jewellery, paste,
jewelled flora and fauna, and base metal jewellery. The
final chapters deal with the immensely popular Art Nouveau,
Arts and Crafts and Art Deco styles with a whole chapter
devoted just to Fabergé, Tiffany and Cartier.
Whether you have already
started to collect antique jewellery or are thinking of
doing so, this easy to read and understand book is an ideal
guide.
