Art History: A Very Short Introduction
by Dana Arnold

Buy Art History: A Very Short Introduction from Amazon.co.uk or from Amazon.com.

Art History: A Very Short IntroductionWhat exactly is art history? It sounds like an erudite and difficult subject but how many of us understand what it entails?

If these are questions you want answered but haven't got time to study the subject in depth, this new book, Art History:A Very Short Introduction, should be ideal.

With just 125 pages including index, references, glossary and further sources of information, it gives a concise, clear and understandable introduction to art history.

Some of us may have thought that it was just a study of art and artists through the centuries. This book, however, shows that it encompasses a much wider field including the way that art is discussed and debated and how a visual form can be described and analysed adequately.

There is discussion of when new forms of art, for example, photography, video, conceptual art, cross the border from art to art history. The author, Dana Arnold, also looks at the effect of feminism on art history, arguing that it had been a discipline traditionally written and discussed from a male point of view. The rise of feminism and the emergence of female art historians changed that perspective. Indeed, art history has broadened to include other social, racial and cultural viewpoints.

Dana Arnold is Professor of Architectural History at the University of Southampton and Director of the Centre for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism. Her recent publications include Re-presenting The Metropolis: Architecture, Urban Experience and Social Life in London; The Georgian Country House: Architecture, Landscape and Society and the edited volumes The Metropolis and its Image: Constructing Identities for London. She is General Editor of the series New Interventions in Art History published by Blackwell and Editor of the Art Historians Association's journal 'Art History'.
