Here in the UK we think of the Arts & Crafts Movement as relating to our own designers like William Morris and tend to ignore the international dimension and designers such as Georg Jensen, Frank Lloyd Wright and Hamada Shoji. The new exhibition and this book remedies this with a global study of the Arts & Crafts Movement. The book, International Arts and Crafts, has contributions from leading scholars in the field and contains exciting new research. It. is edited by Karen Livingstone and Linda Parry. Karen Livingstone is the Curator of the V&A's exhibition and a member of the Museum's Research Department. She has also written a book to coincide with the exhibition: Essential Arts and Crafts. Linda Parry is senior consultant for the exhibition and a leading authority on British 19th century design. The book is divided into three major sections: Arts and Crafts in Britain, Arts and Crafts in America and Arts and Crafts in Japan. The chapters within the first section explore different categories of objects and design from architecture to silver, gardens to jewellery, graphics to photography. In the American section, it is mostly split geographically starting on the East Coast, then Chicago including Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie School and Western North America. This section also includes a chapter on art pottery with a look at international designers. Apart from two chapters on textiles and dress, the section on Europe looks at the subject by country while the one on Japan deals with the Mingei Movement, A New Generation of Artist-Craftsmen and the Cultures of Collecting and Display. As always with a book from V&A Publications, the books is beautifully produced and illustrated and it is sure to become a valued addition to the bookshelves of any collector or dealer in Arts and Crafts.
