Now, in the spring of 2005, with the Victoria & Albert Museum's major exhibition, International Arts and Crafts, the Arts and Crafts Movement is in the spotlight and deservedly so. Not as well known as either Art Nouveau or Art Deco, Arts and Crafts was the precursor to both and followed on from the short-lived Aesthetic Movement.

This new book, Arts and Crafts Furniture, is written by John Andrews, well known for his authorititive books on antique furniture including British Antique Furniture and Starting to Collect Antique Furniture.

Like his other books, this one takes a clear and easy to understand look at Arts and Crafts furniture and the main players in the Movement like CFA Voysey, Ambrose Heal and Gordon Russell.

The book starts with the beginnings of Arts and Crafts and also provides a two page chronology, making it easy to follow its progress. John Andrews then looks at the Guilds that were formed in imitation of those of the Middle Ages then moves on to the major figures and organisations involved including Liberty's and the Glasgow and Cotswolds Schools.

The book doesn't just concentrate on these major players, it also looks at some of the lesser figures who produced beautifully designed and well made furniture. These include Frank Brangwyn, Edwin Lutyens and Peter van der Waals. Then it moves on to commercial companies and the Movement in the USA and includes, in this section, the almost legendary Frank Lloyd Wright, Gustav Stickley and Charles Rohlfs.

It is beautifully illustated throughout and clearly written and is sure to become a much valued reference work for anybody interested in the subject.
