Published to coincide with the V&A's exhibition, Arts and Crafts Gardens is a book that will enchant both gardeners and people who love the Arts and Crafts Movement. Today, on television make-over shows, we hear a lot about making the garden an extra room and an integral part of the home. This is an idea that originated with the Arts & Crafts Movement. The author, Wendy Hitchmough, says in the first chapter:
The Arts and Crafts garden was one with a strong, architectural framework but within that the plants were naturalistic. Gone were the formal planting schemes of earlier times. It is easy to see that this has influenced many gardens and gardeners today. This book doesn't just look at the way gardens were planted and influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement. It also deals with the politics behind this new style of gardening and the architectural features, as well as giving an international perspective with a look at Arts and Crafts gardens in other countries. Of course, there the book deals with the work of Arts and Crafts 'stars' like William Morris, Gertrude Jekyll and Frank Lloyd Wright. As always with books from V&A Publishing, this book is beautifully illustrated, with colour pictures throughout, and clearly written. Any gardener or Arts and Crafts collector would be delighted with it, not only for its beauty but also for its informative and interesting text. Quick Facts
