For
many the Bayeux Tapestry is a piece of Norman propaganda,
putting a favorable spin on their invasion and conquest
of England. But is this really what the Tapestry does or
is there a more subversive message hidden in its beautiful
embroidery?
In his new book, 1066:
The Hidden History of the Bayeux Tapestry, Andrew Bridgeford
looks in detail at the story depicted there and comes to
the conclusion that the viewpoint of the defeated Anglo-Saxons
is discreetly shown in its tableaux. He says in the book,
"...at the deepest level, it is beginning to appear
as a work of explanation [his italics], seen
from the tragic English perspective. The artist, working
under the domination of the Normans, has succeeded brilliantly
in deceiving generation after generation that he is telling
the story from the Norman point of view."
The author goes on to suggest
that the Bayeux Tapestry questions the validity of Duke
William's claim to the English throne and celebrates French,
as opposed to Norman, exploits at the Battle of Hastings.
Additionally, Andrew Bridgeford
attempts to identify previously unknown characters shown
on the Tapestry. Who is Turold the dwarf, shown holding
the reins of two horses and who is the knight who delivers
the final sword blow to King Harold? More important, what
is their significance?
Finally, who commissioned
the Bayeux Tapestry? Was it really Bishop Odo and, if so,
why didn't he notice the subversive messages concealed in
its telling of the story?
These are just a few of the
questions that the author tries to answer. Usefully, his
main points are illustrated with colour plates from relevant
sections of the Tapestry so we can follow his reasoning.
This is a fascinating book
whether your interests are needlework, history or art and
antiques. It is written clearly and the arguments and theories
are easy to follow. It will probably make readers want to
see the Tapestry and look at it more closely to see if they
can see more subversive messages concealed there.
