For
hundreds of years Oriental carpets have been prized and
admired in the west for their beauty. One of the earliest
recorded English owners was Cardinal Wolsey, Lord Chancellor
to Henry VIII. He was given 60 carpets as a diplomatic gift.
Their popularity has continued to the present day.
This new book, Oriental
Carpets and Their Structure, begins with an introductory
chapter on the history of Oriental carpets and their structure
with diagrams and pictures showing how they are made.
It
has 120 colour plates illustrating carpets from the Victoria
and Albert Museum's (V&A) collection. To help people
understand more about them, each plate has information on
the carpet illustrated. There is information on the designs
and the kinds of knot used as well as size and period. There
are also cross references to other carpets illustrated in
the book.
The author, Jennifer Wearden,
is the curator of 20th Century European Textiles in the
V&A and was responsible for many of the museum's 20th
century Oriental carpets until they were transferred to
the Asian Department. She has co-authored Samplers,
Ottoman
Embroidery and Dress
in Detail from Around the World.
The book is clearly and understandably
written on the structure and methods of making these carpets
and will be an asset in the library of any dealer or collector.
