Art
Deco figures, particularly those of slim beautiful young
women, are perhaps the objects that come to mind when most
people think of Art Deco. Typically made of bronze and ivory
or or a substance called chryselephantine, often silvered,
gilded or painted, they are lovely, desirable objects and,
up until the last few years, grievously undervalued.
The author of this book became
interested in the subject when his grandmother died and
left him a figure of dancers by Bruno Zach. This was the
beginning of his own extensive collection. An engineer by
training, his fascination with these figures grew to the
extent that he is now the leading expert on them.
This revised second edition
of Art Deco and Other Figures contains the most
complete range of Art Deco figures ever published. The author
has used a mixture of his own photographs and original importers’
catalogues to illustrate in excess of 1200 pieces.
This book is not a price
guide. Each picture has a title, artist's name where it
is known and the size. There is very little information
for the new collector, just one article on the background
to the figures and another on reproductions and how to identify
them. This is a book for the serious collector and should
prove indispensable.
