Fairings
are small china ornaments made from about 1850 to 1914 and
were bought or won at fairs. The subjects are scenes from
English life, often with a humourous twist and an appropriate
comment on the bottom. For example, one of the illustrations
in the book shows a tall woman with a short man and the
motto is 'The long and short of it'.
The book opens with the history
of fairings and how they were made. There is a useful auction
price guide and some comments on reproduction fairings and
how to identify them.
The bulk of the book, though,
is devoted to a beautifully illustrated colour catalogue
of fairings, sorted alphabetically by motto making them
easy to find. In fact around 150 pages are devoted to this
with many pages containing four different pictures. Each
piece in the pictures is easy to identify and read the motto
which is also printed below.
The author, Derek Jordan,
is reputed to have one of the most extensive private collections
in the world and is an acknowledged expert on the subject.
This book is ideal for any
dealer or collector of fairings as it is easy to consult
and the illustrations are excellent making identification
simple. If you collect fairings, buy this book!
