British
Antique Furniture
Price Guide and Reasons for Values
by John Andrews
This
book was first published in 1968 under the title The
Price Guide to Antique Furniture and has since, not
only been retitled, but updated, revised and reprinted a
number of times as prices and the market for antique furniture
has changed.
In the intervening period
since its first publication, it has become the most popular
and authoritive guide to British antique furniture with
both dealers and private buyers.
It now contains over 1000
black and white pictures and 148 colour plates. These have
been chosen to illustrate why certain pieces are more valuable
than others and which features detract or add to the value.
For example, under the illustration of a black Sutherland
table the author comments, "Black is so unpopular that
the best thing to do is to pop it in the stripper caustic
tank."
The book contains information
on patination, a subject that can be something of a mystery
to the non-expert but of huge importance in the valuing
of a piece. The author, John Andrews, also give advice on
buying furniture as well as a guide to prices over the last
30 years.
In the back of the book there
is information on the woods used in furniture, a glossary
and trade terminology.
This new edition of British
Antique Furniture maintains the high standards set
by previous editions keeping it as the foremost guide to
the subject for anybody interested in antique furniture.
