When we see clothes from the past that were once worn by real people, they can make days gone by much more real to us. Clothes are such an integral part of all our lives. They do more than keep us warm and decent, they say something about who we are, our position in society and our job. We look at clothes from days gone by and we try to imagine how we would feel wearing them. Would they give us confidence and make us feel beautiful or smart? Would they be comfortable? We can see that some of them would certainly restrict our movements - think of the corsets worn by Victorian women to give them tiny waists. This new book is full of beautiful pictures of clothes of all kinds, from some of the greatest couturiers of all time, dating from 1750 right up to 2000, all from the new Fashion Gallery of the Municipal Museum of The Hague in the Netherlands. Examples shown include:
20th century fashions include a wonderfully striking, embroidered evening gown in silk, from 1925 that looks typical of the 'Roaring 20s'. The Art Deco influence clearly shines through in the clothes from the 1920s and 1930s. Then we see clothes from some of the great designers of the century like Chanel, Balenciaga and Dior until we brought right up to date with Karl Lagerfeld and Issy Miyake. The book doesn't confine itself to just clothes, accessories like shoes and bags are included too. Each picture is accompanied by an expert commentary, explaining something of the article's construction, materials and social context. This is an absolutely fascinating book for anybody interested in clothes (and who isn't?) and would be indispensable for any dealer or collector.
