This
book is a completely revised and updated version of a classic
reference work on jewellery published by Antique Collectors
Club, one of the best respected specialist antiques publishing
companies in the UK.
Both authors are long-standing
jewellery experts at Sothebys, the international auction
house, and are both Fellows of the Gemmological Association
of Great Britain.
Daniela Mascetti has published
two previous books on jewellery, Earrings, from Antiquity
to the Present... and Bulgari.
David Bennett, in addition to his work at Sothebys, has
also made a study of hermetic astrology and designs jewellery
individually tailored to the person's individual psychic
needs.
This new expanded edition
of Understanding Jewellery provides a wealth of
information for dealers and collectors. The first section
deals with individual types of gemstones from testing, assessing
their quality and their properties.
The remainder of the book
concentrates on examining the history and styles of jewellery
during different periods starting in the late 18th century
right up to 2000.
The book is lavishly and
beautifully illustrated with 919 colour plates. These have
been selected to show what a buyer should look for when
purchasing jewellery and each piece is shown at its actual
size so readers can get a real sense and feeling for it.
The style of writing is interesting
and easy to understand. This is a book that doesn't just
deal in theories, though, it is meant to be a practical
help in making a decision when buying jewellery.
This book is essential for
anybody, whether dealer or collector, who buys jewellery
on a regular basis.
