For
centuries lace has been a popular adornment of clothes and
household linen and it still enjoys popularity today with
major Parisian fashion designers using it in their collections.
The Victoria & Albert
Museum (V&A) in London has a notable collection of lace.
Its pieces range from the 16th to 20th century and come
from all the major European lace-making countries.
Clare Browne, author of Lace
from the Victoria & Albert Museum, is the curator
of the V&A's Department of Furniture, Textiles and Fashion
so she is eminently qualified on the subject.
She begins the book with
an explanation of the different techniques of needle and
bobbin lace and then moves on to the history of lace from
the 15th and 16th centuries to the late 19th and early 20th
centuries. While recounting the history, she also looks
at the lace industry in different countries.
The bulk of the book is taken
up with black and white and full colour plates of 100 examples
of lace from the V&A's collection, some of which are
not usually on display and have been specially photographed
for the book. The pieces illustrated include silver-gilt
Italian bobbin lace dating from 1560-70, English needle
lace from around 1620-40 and early 18th century French needle
lace.
As we have come to expect
from any V&A Publications book, it is beautifully illustrated
and produced. As well as that, it is an excellent reference
work for anybody interested in lace.
