The
very collectable Japanese netsuke (pronounced net-ski) were
useful, though highly decorative, objects. Because traditional
Japanese clothes had no pockets, other ways had to be found
to carry essential items in a convenient way. Woment put
small things in their sleeves but men suspended purses,
pipes, etc, from silk cords hanging from their sash (obi).
On the opposite end of the cord, netsuke would act as toggles
to keep the cords in place.
This new book on the subject
is written by Julia Hutt, curator in the Asian Department
of the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) specialising
in netsuke and inro (small containers attached to silk cords
on the obi). She lectures on Asian Art for the MA degree
at Sotheby's Institute and her other books include Japanese
Inro and Understanding
Far Eastern Art.
Japanese Netsuke
is a beautifully illustrated book, showing many examples.
Seeing the photographs, it is easy to understand how these
lovely little scultures are so appealing in Europe and the
USA varying, as they do, from lifelike animals and people
to the grotesque to the cute.
The author looks at the development
of netsuke and how it was used. She covers the variety of
materials used and the subjects of the carvings. There is
a chapter devoted to dating netsuke, sometimes a difficult
task and another to the craftsmen who produced them.
This is a useful and interesting
book for collectors of netsuke but should also appeal to
anybody who enjoys Japanese art and culture.
