It seems incredible that
ceramics can last for a thousand years as is the case with
those from the Song Dynasy, 960 AD to 1279 AD.
Perhaps one reason for their
survival is that they have long been prized for the beauty
and elegance of their form, as illustrated in the many pictures
in this new book, Song Dynasty Ceramics. They
have been collected since the 13th century in Asia and are
now much sought after by both Asian and Western collectors.
This book examines China's
great age of ceramic production and draws on new research,
tracing the historiacal and cultural significance of over
118 objects from the Victoria & Albert Museum's (V&A)
magnificent collection.
The collection ranges from
rare and precious items to fascinating study pieces. The
first acquisition was in 1883, among purchases of antiquities
from Beijing but the collection did not grow until after
1910 when more ceramics from the period were found in the
excavations of ancient tombs and kiln sites.
New research undertaken over
the last 20 years has led to a great expansion of knowledge
about the Song era. The author, Rose Kerr, has brought together
the new research in Song Dynasty Ceramics, much
of it published for the first time in the West.
Anybody with an interest
in Eastern ceramics will find this book fascinating as well
as an excellent reference source.
