Many
of us who don't collect toys are amazed by the apparently
high prices that many achieve in auction. Of course these
are usually examples that are in pristine condition and
still have their original boxes, also in excellent condition.
A quick scout around the
internet shows that Schuco tin toys are not currently breaking
records on prices but who knows what the future holds as
more collectors discover them?
This beautifully produced
book could well have an effect on prices as people already
interested in toys see how lovely they are. Chris Knox,
the author and photographer, is a lifelong collector of
Schuco toys and his love of his subject shines through every
page.
Lavishly illustrated in full
colour throughout, the pictures show the beautifully detailed
models of cars, motorbikes, boats, airplanes and other toys
made by the company.
In the introduction, the
author gives a brief history of Schuco and advice on collecting
its toys. He also advises on the whether or not to restore
those items that are in poor condition and how much and
what kind of restoration is acceptable and what will damage
their value.
Each model illustrated is
accompanied by information that includes production dates
and technical specifications. For example, the Grand Prix
Racer 1070/1 includes the following "Long-running clockwork
motor; working hand brake; rack-and-pinion steering; removable
wheels and tires." Not only does this show the kind
of information in the book, it also serves to illustrate
the intricate technical detail that Schuco put into the
making of their toys.
If you collect toys, this
is the book for you even if you don't yet collect Schuco.
They are such lovely, high quality and beautifully engineered
products, it would be hard for any toy collector not to
want to own some.
