Considering that wine labels
are so eminently collectable, it is surprising that this
is the first authorititive book on the subject to be published
for over 50 years.
And what a book... As we
have come to expect from Antique Collectors Club, it not
only contains all the information that any collector or
dealer would want, it is beautifully produced and comprehensively
illustrated.
So how did wine labels come
into use? They were introduced in the early 18th century
when they served a useful rather than purely decorative
purpose on opaque unlabelled wine bottles then later on
glass decanters.
This book covers every imaginable
aspect of the subject including:
- development of the wine
label
- makers
- designs
- marks
- how they were made
- wine labels made in different
areas of the UK
- wine labels made outside
the British Isles
A number of experts have
contributed to the book, most of whom have written for the
journal of the Wine Label Circle on Specialist
subjects while the author,
John Andrews, is a founder member of the Antique Collectors’
Club and the author of the Club’s first book, The
Price Guide to Antique Furniture, published in 1968.
This is a 'must have' book
for any serious collector or dealer. No matter how expert,
anybody reading this book is sure to extend greatly their
knowledge of the subject as well as have the huge enjoyment
of seeing pictures of so many examples of wine labels of
all kinds and periods.
