20th
Century Art Series
by Jackie Gaff
Published by Heinemann Library
Key Stage 2
If
you have read any of my other reviews of Heinemann
Library books for children, you will know that I am a great
fan. Their colourful, picture-filled books with easy to understand
text are ideal for instilling a love of books into even the youngest
children.
This series on 20th
century art is no exception. In all there are six books covering
the whole of the 2th century and they are Key Stage 2 books aimed
at children in the 7 to 11 age group.
The six books are:
- 1900-10
New Ways of Seeing
- 1910-20
Birth of Abstract Art
- 1920-40
Realism and Surrealism
- 1940-60
Art in Emotion
- 1960-80
The Object of Art
- 1980-2000
Very Modern Art

Each of the books covers the key
artists of the period as well as the major art movements and innovations.
For example, in 1910-20 Birth of Abstract Art, you can
find out about Vasily Kandinsky one of the major figures in the
development of abstract art. You can see a picture of one of his
major works with a brief explanation of the symbolism behind it
- just enough to satisfy 7 to 11 year olds without confusing them.
Each
of the books is lavishly illustrated with major works from the
relevant period and photographs of the artists. In addition, they
all have glossaries in the back to explain any difficult words
or expressions used in the text as well as a timeline clearly
showing how the art of the period fitted in with other events
going on at the same time.
If you have a budding young artist
in your family, or you just want to introduce your children to
art, these books are ideal and would make a lovely stocking filler
for Christmas.
They
are nearly all available from either Amazon.co.uk or from Amazon.com
