The Arts and Crafts Sourcebook
Popular
from the mid 19th to the early 20th centuries, the hallmarks of
the Arts and Crafts Movement were traditional craftsmanship, simple,
elegant lines and good basic materials. The Movement encompassed
many different designs from those of Charles Rennie Mackintosh
to William Morris. Arts and Crafts was also a reaction to the
Industrial Revolution with its consequent loss of traditional
skills and the changes it made to family life. The Movement's
exponents were not solely interested in design, they wanted to
change the way people lived and they harked back to a simpler
rural past.
The Arts and Crafts Sourcebook
has colour pictures throughout showing authentic Arts and Crafts
rooms with details picked out emphasising the components of the
'look'. This also enables readers to recreate elements of the
rooms for themselves. The book covers all elements of the home
from floor to ceiling and it gives a list of suppliers at the
back, both antique and reproduction.
It is beautifully and copiously
illustrated and very clearly written. The one small irritation
is the use of bold text for emphasis but overall
this does not detract significantly from an excellent book for
anybody interested in the Arts and Crafts Movement.
