Artists
in Profile:
Contemporary Artists
by Rachel Barnes
Published by Heinemann Library
Key Stage 3
Is
art what the artist says it is? Do you think that if an artists
uses something he or she buys and then displays it, is it really
art? This is the motivation behind much contemporary art.
This new book in the
Heinemann Library's Artists in Profile series looks at the concepts
behind contemporary art including Dada and Surrealism, Performance,
Installations, Video and other forms now used by contemporary
artists.
Written for children
in the 11-14 year old range, Contemporary Artists contains
concise biographies of some of the leading artists including Henry
Moore, Claes Oldenburg and Rachel Whiteread. The author chronicles
significant events in the artists' lives and discusses their work.

The book is beautifully
illustrated, as we have come to expect from this excellent
series, and contains good photographs of the artists and illustrations
of some of their most important and interesting work. At the back
of the book there is a Timeline showing the major events in the
development of contemporary art. There is also a Glossary explaining
difficult words and terms as well as a list of famous works by
the artists covered by the book.
This, and the other
books in the Artists in Profile series, give the reader an excellent
grounding in the most notable art movements of the last 100 years
and the Further Reading resource at the back encourages the reader
to take it further.
