David
Dickinson, an antiques dealer for 25 years, rose to fame on
the BBC programme The Antiques Show and has gone on
to front other antiques related programmes including his current
one, Bargain Hunt.
His down to earth
manner and plain speaking have made him a great favourite and
he has done much to demystify buying antiques. He continues the
good work he started on television in his new book The Antiques
Buyer.
David Dickinson says,
"Through trial and error, I learned, and so, too, can you.
For you, I hope this book might take out some of the trial and
a lot of the error!"
He advises on how
to buy antiques and how to acquire the knowledge to avoid
expensive mistakes. All this is done in a straightforward
and easy to understand way and with his own inimitable charm.
All of the information he gives
is illustrated and enlivened by accounts of his own experiences
over the last 25 years. At the back is a section called 'Things
I Wish I'd Never Sold' and these are some of the most striking
and rare antiques that have passed through his hands in his dealing
career. Not only are the pieces beautifully illustrated, but David
Dickinson has given a great deal of information on each piece
too.
This is definitely a book for anybody
who wants to buy or is interested in antiques. Even if you are
not planning to buy, it is worth buying for the accounts of David
Dickinson's experiences alone.
