Dogs in English Porcelain of the 19th CenturyMany collectors of porcelain make their collection around a particular subjects. Some of the most popular are animals, particularly dogs or cats.

Dennis G Rice has written extensively about English porcelain including these two books, one on collecting dogs and the other on collecting cats in English porcelain.

Both books are beautifully illustrated with colour and black and white pictures. In Dogs in English Porcelain most of the book is divided up into types and breeds of dogs. It is fascinating to see how some breeds have changed over 150 to 200 years whilst others, like poodles, have remained largely unchanged to the inexpert eye. Even the way poodles' coats are cut if familiar. In these chapters the author doesn't confine himself to just the porcelain models of dogs, he also gives information on the history of some of the breeds.

At the end of the book there is a section devoted to the various factories that produced these dogs. He talks about the history of the factories and how they marked their dogs.

Cats in English Porcelain of the 19th CenturyIn contrast Cats in English Porcelain is divided up by factory. It has some beautiful pictures of porcelain cats while the text gives information on the materials and methods used to make them. The author also goes into some detail about the variety of marks that the various factories used at different times.

Some of the most curious of the figures were made by Samuel Alcock in the first half of the 19th century. They feature anthropomorphic cats. One is dressed as a nursemaid with her kitten in pyjamas. Another nursemaid cat is pushing a wheelbarrow with her young cat charges, dressed as Victorian children, sitting in it.

These books feature some charming porcelain figures with a genuinely informative text making them essential for anybody who collects dog or cat figures.
