Animal
Embroideries and Patterns
by Raffaella Serena
In
medieval Europe, aristocratic women were expected to be expert
at needlework and many stunning examples
of their skills still survive.
With the rise of the middle class
in the 19th century needlework gained in popularity and was no
longer restricted to the aristocracy. Berlinwork and cross stitch
largely replaced freehand embroidery and publishers were soon
producing pattern charts.
The Nowotny collection, discovered
in Vienna, has brought forth a large number of 19th century charts
which today's enthusiastic cross stitchers will be keen to follow.
Animal Embroideries and Patterns
by Raffaella Serena perfectly complements Embroideries
and Patterns of Nineteenth Century Vienna (available from
Amazon.co.uk
or Amazon.com),
her first book on the Nowotny Collection of charts. Raffaella
Serena, is an expert in and collector of all applied arts and
has extensively researched petit-point and cross-stitch history
for more than twenty years.

This new book shows a beautiful collection
of animal patterns in colour and then gives a selection of black
and white keyed charts to allow you to produce your own needlework
versions. Some of the patterns are ideal for articles like cushion
covers, others are probably better suited to making into framed
pictures.
The first section is devoted to
angelic 19th century children with their pets whilst the other
sections show individual types of animals including dogs, cats,
birds, horses and exotic animals like lions, a giraffe and a camel.
