The
Victoria and Albert Museum is home to four splendid Medieval tapestries
dating from the 15th century called the Devonshire Hunting Tapestries.
These are the only major tapestries of that time to have survived
to the present day.
The Devonshire Hunting
Tapestries give us a unique insight into life in the Middle Ages
especially as it relates to that most important aspect of aristocratic
life of the timethe hunt.
This beautiful book
shows details from the tapestries and the commentary discusses
how these shine light onto customs and life in the 15th century.
For example, one detail shows an old huntsman, not a member of
the aristocracy, and the author comments on the contrast between
his plain, utilitarian dress and the extravagant fashions of his
masters.
At the back of the
book there are pull-out plates which open out to reveal a picture
of each of the full tapestries.
As well as examining
the details of the tapestries there is also a chapter on design,
production and techniques in which the way medieval tapestries
were made. The author examines and explains how these relate to
the Devonshire Hunting Tapestries and examines the clues that
the design and techniques used for them give to their origins.
