Miller's Buyer's Guide to Art Nouveau and
Art Deco

Almost all interests and pastimes mean buying a selection of reference books: collecting antiques is no exception. All the books reviewed here are from Miller's Publications Ltd who are well-known for their antiques price guides and other  reference books.

Art Nouveau started in the 1890s although it is most associated with the Paris Exhibition of 1900. It is characterised by flowing lines and stylised motifs of plants, flowers, birds and insects. Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his wife, Margaret Macdonald, are amongst its most influential designers in Britain, with Tiffany being a leading exponent in the U.S.A.

Art Deco took its name from the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. It was a reaction to Art Nouveau and was typified by a more geometric and disciplined style. Perhaps two of the most famous Art Deco designers were Susie Cooper and Clarice Cliff with distinctive designers in ceramics.

Miller's Buyer's Guide to Art Nouveau & Art Deco, with the continuing rise in popularity and interest in both Art Nouveau and Art Deco, aims to be the definitive guide on the subject. This new edition of the book contains 400 pages and has more than 4000 illustrations of objects with price ranges for each item. The detailed descriptions below each picture give information on any inscription, size and decoration. Even with the black and white pictures, identification of a piece should be relatively easy. There are also six colour sections of 16 pages each and the illustrations here really do justice to both Art Nouveau and Deco objects.

The collecting areas covered by the guide are: Pottery and Porcelain, Furniture, Lamps, Glass, Bronze and Ivory, Silver and Metalware, Jewellery. All of the major designers, like Tiffany, Lalique and Mackintosh, are included as are less famous designers and makers, many of which are likely to increase in value as the work of the leading lights of the movements becomes increasingly rare.
