The Oxford Companion to Western Art
Whether
you are an expert or a complete newcomer to the world of art, The Oxford Companion to Western Art is certain to prove an
exceedingly useful book. The editor, Hugh Brigstocke, was the curator of
the National Gallery of Scotland for many years. He was also the editor in chief
of the Grove Dictionary of Art and he has worked for the fine art
auctioneers, Sotheby's, where he was finally the head of the Old Master
department. This year he takes up a Paul Mellon Research Fellowship at the
British School in Rome to continue research into 18th and 19th century
rediscovery of early Italian art and on the history of the art book.
The
Companion to Western Art
covers every conceivable aspect of Western art. The 2600 entries, arranged alphabetically, were written
by over 100 distinguished art historians and specialists from universities and
art galleries in the UK, USA and Europe. The book includes short biographies
of artists and appreciations of their work, descriptions of techniques and
styles, museums and galleries. There is also an emphasis on location with
information on the history of cities and towns as centres of patronage and
collecting as well as their role in the art market. In
addition to information on artists, the book covers writers and theorists
whose work has contributed to the world of art. There
are also 49 special articles on a variety of topics, for example, there are
nearly two full pages of discussion on early Christian art and just over five
full pages on the term Romanesque as applied to art and architecture.
