Artists
in Profile: Pop Artists
by Paul Mason
Published by Heinemann Library
Key Stage 3
The
rapid changes in everyday life in the middle of the 20th century
are partly credited with the rise of Pop Art. Most of its exponents
were born in the 1920s and lived through the Depression, World
War II and then the increase in consumerism in the 1950s.
Much of the work of
Pop Artists was concerned with challenging the perception of advertising
for products and also the nature of fame. Two of the most famous
images of the movement were Andy
Warhol's painting of a tin of Campbell's Soup and his images
of Marilyn Monroe.
This new book, aimed
at introducing 11-14 year olds to significant Pop Artists, provides
a good and easy to understand introduction to the basic concepts
behind the movement. It then provides concise biographies of eleven
of Pop Art's major figures including Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
