Staffordshire,
in the Midlands, is synonymous for many with English pottery.
It was and, in some cases, still is home to many of the greatest
names in pottery like Wedgwood and Royal Doulton. The dominance
of the industry led to the area around Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire
being nicknamed 'The Potteries' and today visitors there can
still see many now defunct kilns.
This new book on Staffordshire
Potters is set to become an established part of any serious
collector's or dealer's library.
The bulk of the book consists
of the most comprehensive alphabetical list of Staffordshire
manufacturers of pottery ever compiled. Containing more than
3000 entries, it covers potters working between 1781 and 1900
and includes the company's address and cross references to contemporaneous
directories, some of which are reprinted in the last section
of the book.
The book also includes a selection
of potters' marks and historical background to the growth of
the industry in Staffordshire.
If you collect any kind of Staffordshire
pottery, or deal in it, this book is essential and is bound
to become a standard reference work on the subject.
