Susie Cooper: A Pioneer of Modern Design
Edited by Ann Eatwell & Andrew Casey
This
year, 2002, is the centenary of Susie Cooper's birth and to mark
the occasion the Antique Collectors' Club has published this beautifully
illustrated book chronicling the life and work of one of the most
influential ceramics designers of the 20th century.
She began her career
at the age of 16 as a student at the Burslem School of Art
where she met Gordon Forsyth, Superintendent of Art Education
there who had a great influence on her.

Susie Cooper began
work at A.E. Gray & Co, initially as a paintress and then,
in 1923, as a designer. She worked there until 1929 when she and
her brother-in-law raised the money to set up her own pottery.
She had realised that
there was a gap in the market between very cheap plain crockery
and fine china. She designed for the middle range and combined
innovative design with functionality. She was particularly good
at anticipating what the market would want and keeping ahead of
trends.
The two editors of
Susie Cooper: A Pioneer of Modern Design, Ann Eatwell and
Andrew Casey, have brought together a range of information, much
of it new, from experts, colleagues, family and friends, thereby
giving a new insight into this influential artist.
The book is divided
into two sections: 'Susie Cooper and her Pottery' and 'Susie Cooper
and her Pottery in a Wider Context'. The first section examines
her work and style and includes a chapter of personal memories
written by two people who knew her. The second section examines
her work in the wider context of design in the 20th century.
There is also an introduction by
her son, Tim Barker, who tells us what it was like to be the son
of a famous designer as well as relating his early experiences
in his mother's business.
Overall, if you collect or are
interested in Susie Cooper's work, this is an excellent book.
Not only does it provide a wealth of information and personal
insights into her character, there are also many pictures of Susie
Cooper's wares that have never before been published.
