Charlotte Samuels, the author, has lectured widely on the subject of textiles and is also a curator in the V&A's Department of Furniture, Textiles and Fashion.

There are more than 100 colour pictures, the majority full page plates, show the work of designers of the period including those of the Wiener Werkstätte, Paul Poiret, Raoul Duffy and Alberto-Fabio Lorenzi.

In front of the section of colour plates, there is a list of the plates that includes a full description of the fabric illustrated including the type of fabric, e.g. silk, linen, satin, the designer, date and the company that produced it.

At the back of the book there is also a useful glossary, notes on firms and designers and a bibliography.
