1930s - Dalí developed paranoia-criticism which he explained thus, "....irrational understanding based on the interpretive-critical association of delirious phenomena." It was based on the way that obsessions caused by some types of mental illness can bring together different and unrelated objects. Examples of paintings from this period include The Persistence of Memory (1931),Surrealist Objects and Gauges of Instantaneous Memory (1932). During this period the Surrealists had become increasingly antagonised by his right wing views and his support for Hitler. The Surrealists finally rejected him in 1939, after he publicly supported Franco in Spain.
